Ionic vs Particulate Colloidal Silver

There's been a long-running debate about whether particulate colloidal silver is more effective than ionic colloidal silver. After years of making colloidal silver in NZ and reviewing the research, our experience and the science both point the same way: ionic colloidal silver is the more effective form. Here's what's behind that.

The advantage of ionic silver

Ionic silver exists as positively charged silver ions (Ag+) dissolved in water. It's clear in colour and biologically active in its current form. Particulate silver exists as solid silver nanoparticles suspended in water, usually yellow, amber, or brown in colour. To become biologically active, those particles still need to release ions first.

In other words: ionic silver is already in the form that interacts with bacteria and pathogens. Particulate silver has to convert first.

The scientific findings

1. R.D. Todd's lab trials

US Army medic R.D. Todd ran a comparative study showing ionic colloidal silver is at least 100 times more powerful than particulate silver. From his findings:

"With or without the HCl mixture added, the Staphylococcus cultures on the plates were virtually eradicated in just four minutes when treated with ionic silver. But the culture plates treated with 'true colloid' particulate silver showed only a slight reduction in bacterial count."

Key results:

  • Ionic silver killed bacteria within 4 minutes
  • Particulate silver showed only slight antibacterial action
  • Once particulate silver loses its small ionic component, it loses almost all antibacterial activity
  • After HCl exposure, ionic silver was shown to be 10,000 times more effective than particulate silver under the same conditions

2. Rice University, 2012

A study published in the journal Nano Letters concluded that silver ions, not silver particles, are what give silver its antibacterial power. The study's title was unambiguous:

"Ions, not particles, make silver toxic to bacteria."

3. Dr. Robert O. Becker

Becker, an orthopaedic surgeon who pioneered research on silver and bio-electricity at Syracuse University in the 1970s and 80s, attributed the effectiveness of silver to its ionic form. He used a low-current device to generate silver ions inside the body, very similar to how modern colloidal silver generators work today.

4. The Brooke Army Burn Centre

At the Brooke Army Medical Centre in Texas, decades of research on treating burns with silver reached the same conclusion. From Albert T. McManus, MD, head of microbiology at the Burn Centre:

"Conversion of silver to silver ions is necessary for efficacy."

183 further clinical studies referencing the effectiveness of ionic colloidal silver are listed in The Ultimate Colloidal Silver Manual.

5. The Natural Immunogenics study

A US company called MesoSilver claimed their particulate silver was more effective than ionic silver, arguing that ionic silver gets neutralised by stomach acid. To test this, John W. Roberts, PhD, of Natural Immunogenics ran a head-to-head petri dish study comparing both products against two strains of Staphylococcus aureus. The ionic product came out clearly ahead.

What this means for you

If you're choosing colloidal silver in NZ, colour is a quick guide:

  • Clear or very pale yellow = predominantly ionic
  • Yellow, amber, or dark = predominantly particulate
